Masters Service Design

IED Barcelona

IED Barcelona

IED Arts and IED Diplomas are post-secondary school courses with obligatory attendance, designed for a limited number of students who want to take their talent and creativity and transform them into a profession, as well as to acquire knowledge as a means of constructing the personal, professional and social project for their own lives. The training aims at achieving three basic objectives: knowledge of technologies, of materials and of design culture, the ability to understand the market and its requirements and the ability to communicate the qualities of design. The first year is devoted to acquiring the basic methodology necessary for students to adopt the right approach to creative work. In the years that follow, there is a more tense focus on design activities developed on the base of real client briefs, supported by the guidance of lecturers and by the supervision of consultants in the field in question. The well-established relationship between IED and the working world enables students to take part in events, seminars and competitions: often real working experience that culminates in dissertation projects.

Masters Service Design

The Service Design allows future service designers to learn about different conceptual perspectives when designing a service. It is an opportunity for students to gain theoretical sight and to practice usg specific methods and tools for each approach. Students are tasked with team projects and challenged with the entire process of creating a new service or transformg an existg one – from research and conception to Prototyping and preparing pilot interventions.

Services are all around us. We may not realise it, but we use dozens of them every day. We get around on public transport or shared vehicles, we read the news on our smartphones, we pay for our Shopping, we go to lessons, we throw waste the b and we go to the doctor’s.

The truth is that, regardless of what we perceive, the figures show a risg trend services worldwide. according to the World Bank, services already account for 65% of global GDP – 69.5% high-come areas and 53.7% medium or low-come countries.

This has triggered a growg demand for professionals who specialise this sector, including designers, which is why the Service Design was created. The service sector is a fascatg field to study today’s world, where technological phenomena such as artificial intelligence, robotics and the Internet of thgs are drivg deep, dizzyg transformations the way we pay for, provide and use services..

The concept of Service Design refers to innovation services from a human and systemic perspective by leveragg creativity and iterative processes. So, what exactly does a service designer do? These are some of their possible functions, dependg on their professional background and the context they work :

– Orchestratg the various stages of a service to ensure a pleasant, seamless experience.

– Detectg opportunities for new services and conceptualisg systems that allow to co-create added value with users or even among multiple organisations.

– enabling various players to take an active part defining new practices and narratives about value, both side and outside organisations.

The learning experience on this course consists :

• Undertakg the practical and experimental development of real projects for companies selected by IED Masters.

• understanding the theoretical framework and fundamentals of service design as a basis for decision‑making.

• Hearg about first‑hand experiences shared by teachers and guest speakers.

• The course tackles service design from three different perspectives three team projects. Each project the course goes through every stage the design process: gatherg formation, synthesisg and defining the approach, iterative development and preparing for implementation. Nevertheless, students are expected to tackle every project from a new standpot. The reason is to make students feel more and more comfortable with the design process. It also ensures they are prepared to take on creasgly challengg tasks.
